When people come to my studio I try to make it as casual and fun as possible - when I start asking your kids what they've been up to and where are they going next when the photo shoot is over, it's actually a form of distraction - it's distracting them from the fact that they are possibly somewhere they don't really want to be..... Of course once we start if they aren't comfortable having their photo taken I generally take them outside and we have a look for ducks on the lake or look at the sheep in the field - this way I can get some natural shots of them doing things they are more interested in than me and my camera and once they have then realized I am taking their photos whilst they are doing something else it all seems a lot easier for them. The biggest thing I try to achieve by talking about lots of different things is to get people to relax, I might tell them a funny story - something that has happened to me, making people laugh and smile tends to put them at ease and relax a situation, showing kids photos of my dogs is always a help too - I have huskies - kids love seeing their photos.
They key is very much about chatting to the kids on their level, asking them about what they enjoy, computer games, PS games, what they've been up to at school or what hobbies they might have, once I have them chatting to me and smiling and telling me about themselves life at the studio becomes a lot less worrying for them, which I guess is why so many people keep coming back :-)
Of course bringing your pet along helps massively too, kids love bringing the dog along - I've even had cats and hamsters in the studio too, if they're part of your family I always say bring them along and get them in the photos.
