I have a lot of couples come to me and we have a chat about their Wedding Day and what they would like etc and I also talk to them about the fact that I always carry spare cameras and batteries and that I have insurance and that if something happens to me, (touch wood it will never happen), I will get another photographer there so they wont be let down etc and most couples say they had never thought to ask such questions…… well before you hire a photographer there are lots of questions that you should ask, because as well as feeing comfortable with the Photographer you choose, think about these things too.
1) Are you our actual photographer? Will you have an assistant? Will this cost extra?
These are great questions for a couple with a large wedding because it may require more than one photographer. Be sure the photographer lets you meet anyone who will be coming with him or her up.
2) How many weddings have you worked? How many similar in style and size to our wedding?
This will be some valuable information about your photographer because you want someone who will understand the challenges associated with your particular size and style of wedding. You also want to know that they have plenty of experience and you are not their first wedding shoot !
3) May we see a portfolio or samples of a wedding similar in size and style to ours?
The samples will probably be the ultimate deciding factor in hiring a photographer. Be sure you like what you see before you sign on the dotted line.
4) Do you have a written agreement that describes pricing and terms of service?
Just like with any other wedding vendor, it’s important to get everything in writing. Terms and conditions should be on the website, it’s a legal requirement. (Mine are by the booking form) A photographer who brings this to the table on the forefront is a true professional.
5) Can we request a list of shots for you to take?
While you want your photographer to use his or her professional eye, this is still your wedding. Be wary of a photographer who will not take requested shots. If you want any group shots, be sure to also ask at this time as some photograhers wont do group shots at all.
6) What is your style of photography?
Most photographers state on their website the style of photography they shoot, whether they actually spell it out or not, you can see from the style of images you see in their gallery whether or not you will like their style of work.
7) Do you have insurance ?
Most vebues wil want your chosen photographer to have public liability insurance. Insurance is important on so many levels, so be sure to ask.
Do you shoot on professional cameras and do you have a back up ?
There are a lot of people these days who think anybody can pop out and be a wedding photography with any camera – and just have one – no spare. So – what happens if their one camera breaks as you are about to walk up the aisle ????? can they pull a spare out of their camera bag with a lens already in place or is that their day over????? and your memories lost too……
9) Do you meet up with us before the Wedding Day ?
I generally(unless people are out of the country), wont book a wedding until I meet the couple. I need to meet the couple and know that we will work well together, to make sure that I am the right photographer for them and vice versa. It also gives me an opportunity to ask as many questions as I need to to find out all of the details about their Big Day.
10) If the Wedding runs late, can you stay longer on the day, cost?
Some photographers will only stay for their originally booked hours, others will have nothing else booked for your day and so if things run late they will stay with you if you wish and charge by the hour for as many hours as you need them to stay on, ask this when you book as you never know what may happen on your day.
